The Different Types of Therapy

The Different Types of Therapy

Nearly 1 in 5 Americans struggle with their mental health, and with that, more turn to therapy. Therapy can be a wonderful tool to help you manage a mental health problem or face life’s challenges, but it can also be a key part of recovery from a drug or alcohol dependency.

Drug, Alcohol, Mental Health Counseling & Evaluation Services, Inc in Honolulu, Hawaii is proud to offer different therapy methods to help with your mental health and support your recovery. Read on to learn about the different types of therapy we offer and how they can help you.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy

Cognitive-behavioral therapy, more commonly known as CBT, is a method of talk therapy often used to treat depression but is also proven to work for many different types of disorders and issues.

During cognitive-behavioral therapy, you explore the relationship between your thoughts/feelings (cognitive elements) and actions (behavioral elements).

The aim of CBT is usually to change your thinking patterns by:

With this mode of therapy, you often set goals with your therapist and receive homework to do at home.

Rational emotive behavior therapy

Rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) is a type of therapy that is used to treat a lot of different types of disorders, including:

REBT is related to CBT in that it works with the assumption that our cognition, emotions, and behavior are linked together.

A key part of REBT is the ABC model, which suggests we often experience the following steps when interpreting external events:

For example, if your boss calls you in for an unexpected meeting, you might experience the ABC model in the following way:

By working with a therapist, you may discover that your ABC model is inaccurate. You may realize that your boss may be calling you in for a number of reasons, perhaps even to thank you for your hard work.

12-step therapy

You’ve probably already heard of 12-step therapy in TV or movies that deal with addiction issues. 12-step therapy is a recommended type of therapy for substance abusers.

A 12-step therapy program is a type of group therapy that is there to offer support in a structured way. You will be in therapy with people in the same boat as you, and these sessions receive supervision from a trained support worker, who often has similar past experiences to the support group.

You will find that the 12 steps usually share the same steps in every program, which include:

If your 12-step group is religious, the steps may also include acknowledging God’s existence and seeking spiritual support.
